Everybody’s worried about time
But I just keep that shit off my mind
People living on twenty four hour clocks
But we’re on a ride that never stops
~ Ziggy Marley
With a week between my school-year job and my summer job, I hopped on a plane to meet my parents in Portland to visit my brother. I honestly can’t find the words to describe how amazing this trip was.
The first day we drove over to Cannon Beach. The clouds were majestically hanging in the sky as we walked along the sand. There was a rock in the distance that reminded me of the rock creature from ‘The NeverEnding Story’. I kept waiting for it to rise from the ocean and come to life.
We stopped at a chocolate shop in town to grab some hot chocolate and found these amazing hand painted chocolates! (bonus: they have whiskey inside!)
After that, we continued along the coast to Astoria, Oregon where we discovered the house that ‘The Goonies’ was shot at.
The next day we explored the Portland shops. We ate at the Deschutes Brewery where I had the BEST gluten-free beer I have ever tasted. I also became slightly obsessed with Paxton Gate and Powells. The necklace I bought used a real butterfly wing and it’s G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S.
That night, we ate at the restaurant my brother works at (23Hoyt). I’m drooling thinking about it. Check out the size of the pork rind!
We woke up the next morning to rain, so we decided to head up to some wineries along the border of Oregon and Washington. I never knew Oregon had such amazing wines!
Also found my new favorite winery: AniChe Cellars in Washington. All the wines are based off of literary characters and the wine makers were so down to earth.
Thursday was supposed to be beautiful out, so we saved our hike day for then. My brother brought us to Angel’s Rest. It was a gorgeous hike with views that left you speechless.
After our hike, we grabbed some dinner and I got to experience Salt and Straw. Ohmergerd. Long line, so worth it. After indulging in that, we made our way to Uptown for a nightcap of drinks and pool.
Our flights left Friday, early afternoon, so we all meet up one last time to grab some food-truck breakfast. My brother found a place for me called the GF chef. Do yourself a favor and go there now. Seriously. The best GF breakfast I have ever had and it is run by the sweetest couple.
Portland, you are one amazing city. I have a feeling I won’t be able to stay away for long.
